COLUMBIA FALLS – John and Pam Sawyer of Columbia Falls are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter Allison Sawyer to Roel Verhaak, both of Houston, Texas. Roel is the son of Jeroen and Cecile Verhaak of Boekelo, the Netherlands. Allison is a 2003 graduate of Narraguagus High School in Harrington and a 2007 graduate of Bates College in Lewiston, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in neuroscience. Roel graduated high school in 1996 from Kottenpark College in Enschede, the Netherlands. He earned a Master of Science degree in biomedical sciences from Rodboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, in 2000, and a doctorate in medicine from Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in 2006. Allison and Roel are both employed at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. She is a senior research assistant in the Department of Neuropsychology, and he is an assistant professor of computational biology. The couple met through mutual co-workers and friends while Allison was working as a researcher at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Roel was working as a researcher at the Broad Institute, both in Boston. They are planning a May 6, 2011, wedding at The Inn on Peaks Island with Helen Rankin officiating.
