AUGUSTA, Maine — A special election will be held on Tuesday, March 1, to fill a House seat that includes portions of rural Penobscot, Washington and Hancock counties, the Secretary of State’s Office announced Thursday.
Rep. Everett McLeod Sr., R-Lee, died on Dec. 20 after a lengthy battle with cancer, creating a vacancy in House District 11. McLeod was elected in November to his fourth term representing the district.
Per Maine election law, the Democratic, Republican and Green Independent committees in the district have until 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, to file nominating paperwork with the Secretary of State’s Office.
Party nominees for the special election will be chosen during committee caucuses. Unenrolled, or independent, voters interested in running for the District 11 seat also must file by Jan. 27.
Additionally, District 11 voters now can request absentee ballots from municipal clerks.
House District 11 stretches from Passadumkeag and Greenfield Township in the west to Grand Lake Stream Township and Forest City Township in the east. It also includes portions of rural Hancock County.
