MACHIAS – Howard M. Getchell, 93, died Jan. 22, 2011, in Machias. He was born Aug. 29, 1917, son of the late Sabine and Effie (Berry) Getchell.
Howard attended Marshfield schools and worked in the woods for several years. He married Elsie Roberts in 1940.
He worked for Georgia Pacific for most of his life as a bulldozer operator. He was the deacon of Marshfield Congregational Church for many years, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and his family. Howard was a World War II Army veteran.
He was predeceased by his wife, Elsie Roberts; and two brothers, George and Horace Getchell. He is survived by one son, William Getchell Marsh-field; one daughter, Peggy Adams and her husband, John M. Adams, of Granville Summit, Pa.; two grandchildren, Susan Swetizer and husband, John, of Reading, Pa., and James Getchell and wife, Amy, of Roques Bluff; four great-grand-children, Brandon Adams of Reading, Pa., Laura Levan of England, Brian and Dustin Getchell of Roques Bluff; and one great-grandchild.
