BANGOR , Maine — A Dexter man whose apartment house was being taken by the town for nonpayment of taxes was indicted Wednesday by the Penobscot County grand jury on an arson charge in connection with a fire that destroyed the building last month.
Henry Murdoch, 45, of St. Francis Street was arrested Dec. 23 by Investigator Scott Richardson of the State Fire Marshal’s Office and Dexter police Officer Kevin Wintle, according to a previously published report.
Murdoch remains free on bail.
Richardson said last month that an investigation had concluded that the fire was set intentionally using an ignitable liquid.
Murdoch, who was at home during the Dec. 15 fire and suffered smoke inhalation, was treated at Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft and later transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He was released two days later, according to Richardson.
The fire marshal said Murdoch owned the building and that the fire began in the downstairs apartment where he lived.
If convicted, Murdoch faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.
