HODGDON – Bertrand E. Gardiner Jr., 80, died Feb. 13, 2011, at a local health care facility. He was born Sept. 29, 1931, in South Kingston, R.I., the son of Bertrand E. Sr. and Carrie S. (Caswell) Gardiner.
Bertrand served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a member of Houlton American Legion. He was employed with General Dynamics, Groton, Conn., and was a 60-year veteran of Peacedale (R.I.) Fire Department. He enjoyed coaching his children and others in all sports they participated in.
Bertrand is survived by his wife, Ruth Gardiner of Hodgdon; seven children, Bertrand E. Gardiner III of Rhode Island, Gary K. Gardiner and Susan Martinez, both of Hodgdon, Steven B. Gardiner of New Limerick, Kimberly Gardiner and Dean B. Gardiner, both of Hodgdon and Evelyn Boettger of Germany; 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Gerald Gardiner of Rhode Island; sisters, Sharon Lewis of Sherman and Lydia Sorenson of Rhode Island; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Alfred C. Gardiner; and three sisters, Beverly McArvelle, Janice Charnley and Loly Kalinski.
