AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine has a law against distracted driving, but texting while operating a motor vehicle remains a problem.
On Wednesday, a summit on the subject is planned in Portland. State Sen. Bill Diamond is co-hosting the meeting with AAA of Northern New England. The keynote speaker will be Ron Medford, a safety expert with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Diamond, a Windham Democrat who sponsored Maine’s distracted driving law, police and other experts also will speak. Diamond has now submitted a bill to impose penalties on those who text while driving, saying it’s time Maine joined 30 other states that have done so.
