ELLSWORTH – Jeanne M. Sweeney, born in Scotia, N.Y., passed away peacefully Feb. 28, 2011, with her family by her side, at her home in North Ellsworth.
Jeanne graduated from Scotia (N.Y.) High School and entered registered nursing training at Ellis Hospital School of Nursing, Schenectady, N.Y. She was in the first U.S. Army cadet nurse class formed in 1945. In her senior year she was sent to Northington General Hospital, Tuscaloosa, Ala., to help fill the shortage of U.S. Army nurses coming back from Germany. Jeanne also served as multi-term treasurer of Union River Stamp Club.
She is survived by her children, Mark Sweeney and spouse, Sue, Laurie Visicone and spouse, Dom, and Dianne Reed and spouse, Dave; grandchildren, Patrick, Will, Sean, Dean, Trever, Matt, Meagan, Kristy and Daniel; great-grandchildren, Emma, Kayleigh and Logan; nieces, Merridee Marcus and Sherryl Stientjes and their spouses; and nephew, Nick Bearce. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 66 years, Roy Sweeney.
