LAMOINE – A. Marie Liberty, 76, died Friday, March 11, 2011, at Sonogee Rehabilitation & Living Center, Bar Harbor, from complications related to metastatic breast cancer. She was born July 26, 1934, in Ellsworth, the fourth and youngest child of Guy Frederick Closson and Grace Higgins Closson.
Marie was educated in Ellsworth public schools and at the University of Maine, Orono, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in food and nutrition in 1985. She was a strong-willed and openhearted person, with a deeply held and cherished faith. She was a member of First Congregational Church, UCC, Ellsworth, where she loved singing in the choir. As a teen, she was in the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. She loved sewing and quilting, and was a charter member of Pine Tree Quilter’s Guild since 1978. She was an avid reader, loved discussing new ideas and was a member of Ellsworth Literature Club for 50 years. The extent of Marie’s love and devotion to family and friends is well known. With knowledge that Marie had a “West Coast spirit” stuck in an “Eastern Time Zone body,” Marie was loved and will be sorely missed.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Luray and Merl. She is survived by her sister, Corris Sittnick of Ellsworth; her children, Guy Phillips of Florida, Carol Smith of Lamoine and Kenneth Liberty of Susanville, Calif.; as well as numerous nephews, nieces, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 19, at First Congregational Church, Ellsworth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, Mary Dow Center’s Robert Bruce Goodrich Memorial Transportation Scholarship Fund, with appreciation for all they did, for she believed in paying it forward.
