LINCOLN – William “Bill” Cartland Head, 89, died peacefully March 8, 2011, at his 815 Main St. home. Bill was born June 26, 1921, in Dover, N.H.

Prior to moving to Lincoln in 1988, he resided in Dover, N.H., for 67 years. He attended the University of New Hampshire prior to enlisting in the Merchant Marines during World War II, and served his country from 1942 to 1946. After the war he returned to Dover, N.H., to work in industry and business. He was industrial relations manager for Kidder Press/Moore Business Forms prior to owning his own insurance agency. He gave his time to many benevolences and served on the board of directors for Dover Children’s Home, YMCA, Rotary, Junior Achievement and Dover Chamber of Commerce, among other organizations. He was a faithful member of the Congregational Church in Dover, N.H., and Lincoln, where he served for many years as deacon, trustee and director of Sunday school and youth program. An avid outdoorsman, he loved to ski, hike, camp, garden and farm in Maine and New Hampshire.

He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Helen E. Head. Bill is survived by his son, William E. Head and wife, Susan S. Head; and three grandchildren and their families, Bryan E. Head and wife, Amber B. Head, Katharine H. Hurd and husband, Chad Hurd, and Bert James Head. He also leaves behind great-granddaughter, Ava Helen Head; great-stepgranddaughter, Maya Taylor; his sister and her husband, Margaret and Bartlett Brown; and three nieces and their families.

A memorial service will be held 12:15 p.m. Sunday, March 27, at First Congregational Church of Lincoln, with a service in Dover, N.H., at a later date.
