ASHLAND – Alvery Carney, 82, died March 17, 2011, at Mars Hill Nursing Home. He was born July 5, 1928, in Ashland, the son of the Joseph and Evelyn (Saucier) Carney.
He is survived by three sons, Rodney and wife, Frances, Ronald and wife, Debbie, and Brian and wife, Laurie; three daughters, Donna Deabay and husband, Freeman Jr., and Karen Flint and husband, Keith, all of Ashland, and Elaine Gagnon and husband, Chris, of Vernon, Conn.; two brothers, Alcide Carney and friend, Karan, of Masardis and Francis Carney and wife, Nancy, of Ashland; one sister, Florence Pelkey of Presque Isle; grandchildren, Torrey Carney and friend, Jo, Buffy Carney, Justin Carney and wife, Alisa, Cheryl Martin and husband, Mark, Kenny Melvin and wife, Tina, Ryan Carney Sr. and wife, Michelle, Holly Chasse and husband, Raymond, Hope Doughty and husband, Ronald, Freeman Deabay III and friend, Stephanie, Chad Deabay and wife, Jodi, Erick Deabay and wife, Lou Ann, Joel Deabay and wife, Shannon, Megan Carney, Andrea Belanger and husband, Brian, Allison Gagnon, Dakotta Flint, Cheyanne Flint and Savannah Flint; great-grandchildren, Chelsea Carney, Summer Carney, Shayla Carney, Shyla Carney, Joshua Martin, Sarah Martin, Morgan Meyer, Leta Kennedy, Torren Kennedy, Alexis Carney, Roegean Carney, Kaiden Carney, Jaici Carney, Ryan Carney Jr., Brandon Carney, Mia Carney, Michaela Carney, Tyler Chasse, Amber Chasse, Morgan Doughty, Drew Doughty, Abby Doughty, Emma Doughty, Courtney Deabay, Freeman Deabay IV, Kash Deabay, Kavin Deabay, Lillian Deabay, Jaci Deabay, Camryn Deabay, Lane Deabay, Lauryn Deabay, Mason Deabay, Reece Deabay, Lukas Deabay, Destinee Tilley, Shaina Belanger and Carter Belanger; great-great-grandchildren, Ryder Caron and Rachel Rose Martin; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He will also be remembered by his special friend, Dora Theriault and her children, Amy and Todd Gorton, and granddaughter, Ashley. In addition to his parents, Alvery was predeceased by his wife, Lillian A. (Cloukey) Carney; granddaughter, Briana Carney; great-granddaughter, Sierra McPherson; grandson, Keith Melvin; brother, Oliver Carney; and sisters, Gloria Bernier and Maxine (Legassie) Holmes.
Our father lived in Ashland most of his life. He worked as a heavy equipment operator, where he leveled ground at Loring Air Force Base, Skyway Middle School and U.S. Customs bordering Canada. He helped develop the new carburetion system for Pratt & Whitney. He also worked for Great Northern Paper Co., where he was given a special award for being the best cable crane operator at the time. He was owner of Hilltop Market and Carney’s Cash ‘N Carry. Later he was a gentleman’s farmer. He worked for Harold F. Wood farms as a laborer/equipment operator. He also did carpentry, and there was virtually nothing our dad didn’t know how to do. There wasn’t a lazy bone in his body and he was the most loving father, who made us proud. He never said a bad word about anyone and felt sorry for other people’s misfortunes. He was easy going, patient and loved everyone, especially his children. Family was very important to him and he loved gatherings with music and barbecue. His nickname was Beau, because he was so handsome. He taught us to pray and he believed in the Lord. Though we will miss him tremendously, we believe he is now in a better place he so richly deserves. Very special thanks are given to all the caregivers at Mars Hill Nursing Home, who treated him with utmost respect.
Relatives and friends may call 6-9 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. until the time of service Monday at St. Mark Catholic Church, Allen Farm Road, Ashland, where a funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday. Interment will be in the parish cemetery later this spring. Donations may be made to Arthritis Association or American Heart Association in his memory.
