OLD TOWN, STETSON and EAST HAMPTON, Conn. – Alice G. May, 89, died peacefully March 19, 2011, at an Orono health care facility. She was born Feb. 6, 1922, on The Point, Newport, R.I., a daughter of William and Maude (Lewis) Nimmo.
Alice grew up on Pennacook Avenue, Newport, R.I., and was a graduate of Rogers High School. On Sept. 29, 1941, she married her high school sweetheart, John A. May. After her husband’s release from the service, they resided in Lebanon, Conn., for several years before moving to East Hampton, Conn., in 1956, where they built their dream home. While raising four children, she also worked part time in various positions including housekeeping, more than 10 years at Wall’s Dairy and as a sales associate at Marlborough Country Barn for a number of years.
After her husband’s retirement they moved to Stetson. She was employed at Lighting Studio, Bangor, for several years.
She and her husband enjoyed quilting and embroidery, and attending various craft fairs, where they enjoyed selling their goods and chatting with people. They also enjoyed traveling and photography. After her husband’s death she moved to Old Town. Alice was a life member of American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and was a very proud Air Force mother, as all four of her sons served in the Air Force. Alice will be fondly remembered as a happy, upbeat woman that loved life itself. She always had a smile to share, never a bad word to say and made a difference to everyone whom she met.
She is survived by two sons, John “Jack” May of Hermon and Gordon May and his wife, Jaunitta, of Dedham; daughter-in-law, Carol May of Old Town; five grandchildren, Karen May, Michael May and his wife, Mandy, David May and his companion, Jodi Leigh, Jessica Rojo and her husband, J.P., and Morghan Hendsbee and her husband, Chris; eight great-grandchildren, Kenny, Emma, and Olivia Chambrello, Conner and Sadie May, Kai and Kianna Rojo, and Ariyah Hendsbee; a brother, Johnny Nimmo and his wife, Carol, of Natick, Mass.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family thanks the staff of Orono Commons for the compassionate care given to Alice.
