ISLAND FALLS – Frank M. Bomba, 93, died March 18, 2011, in Houlton. He was born Aug. 10, 1917, in Lawrence, Mass., the son of John and Louise (Piatek) Bomba.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy, and was a highly decorated veteran. He was in a suicide squad/subchaser No. 979 from Africa to Anzio, Italy, where he helped clear a way for a British ship to transport the free French to safety. After this he was transferred to the USS Wasp in 1952, which hit the USS Hobson, breaking it in two. He retired from service in June 1958.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Laura (Drusendahl) Bomba of Island Falls; one son, Richard Matthew Bomba; two grandchildren, Michelle and Matthew, all of Atmore, Ala.; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Sadie Milos, Thresa Tribino and Mary Michaud, all of Lawrence, Mass.; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and eight siblings.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Bowers Funeral Home, Sherman Street, Island Falls, with Deacon Al Burleigh officiating. Spring interment will be at Maine Veterans Cemetery, Augusta. For an online memory book and to send condolences, please visit
