GUILFORD, Maine — Two Piscataquis Community Middle School students will compete April 27 in the district Civic Oration contest sponsored by Modern Woodmen Fraternal Financial based out of Rock Island, Ill.

The school competition was held last Wednesday when seventh-grade students had to write a speech on the topic ‘’An American Invention.’’ The speech had to be three to five minutes in length on the American invention of their choice. The speeches were read in social studies classes first, then the top 10 scorers had the opportunity to present them again Wednesday, when the first-, second- and third-place finishers were announced.

The winners were Brooke Draper, first place, Charlotte Clukey, second, and Alanna Page, third place. Draper and Clukey will compete against the top two speakers from five other schools at the district competition at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, in Guilford.

Greenville planning for its 175th birthday

GREENVILLE, Maine — Organizations, businesses and families are being asked to help participate in the town’s 175th celebration planned for the week of Aug. 21-27.

A committee has been meeting to plan the event, which will include programs, parties, contests and historical tours for all age groups.

The committee is organizing a calendar of events that will be shared with the local newspapers, the Greenville newsletter and the calendar.

In addition, the committee is looking for financial support to help fund the activities, the purchase of celebration flags, mailings, advertising and prizes. Piscataquis County soil, water board to meet

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — The board of supervisors of the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 11, at the district office.
