YORK – Germaine M. Whitney, 76, died Saturday, April 2, 2011, with her family by her side at Hyder Family Hospice House, Dover, N.H. She was born July 27, 1934, in Orono, a daughter of the late Harold and Dorrice (Smith) Myers.

She was a graduate of the University of Maine, Orono, with a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics. She was a teacher of home economics and a substitute teacher of general subjects for many years. Later in her career she went into banking, where she was a customer service representative for the former Fleet Bank and for Bank of America. She worked at branches in York, Ogunquit and Wells, before retiring after 20 years of service. She enjoyed being with people. She was an avid seamstress and especially enjoyed needlepoint. She also enjoyed gardening, wildlife and hummingbirds.

Her husband of 46 years, Dale E. Whitney, died in 2001. She leaves three sons, Eric N. Whitney and his partner, Linda Knippers, of Mont Vernon, N.H., Steven G. Whitney and his wife, Rebecca, of Center Ossipee, N.H., and Arnold W. Whitney and his wife, Kristi, of Barrington, N.H.; a grandson, Alexander W. Whitney; and a sister, Diana Ouellette of Lincoln. The Whitney family expresses their gratitude to the Portsmouth Regional Hospital Oncology Center staff for the exceptional care Germaine received.

A funeral service for Mrs. Whitney will be held 1 p.m. Friday, April 8, at Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Calling hours will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at the funeral home.
