BANGOR – Dorothy Greenlaw Hawkes, 94, wife of the late Gordon J. Hawkes, passed away peacefully April 13, 2011, in Brewer. Dorothy was born Feb. 16, 1917, in Presque Isle, daughter of Raymond and Bertha (Brundage) Greenlaw.
She graduated from Presque Isle High School and Maine School of Commerce. She moved to Philadelphia where she was licensed in cosmetology and worked as a beautician. Dorothy returned to Maine and married Gordon J. Hawkes, Dec. 19, 1947. They enjoyed 57 years of marriage before Gordon passed away in May 2005. Dorothy worked as a secretary with various businesses and was secretary/receptionist for Dr. Sidney Chason before her retirement. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Bangor. Dorothy thoroughly enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens. She spent hours painting with oils on canvas, wood and holiday decorations. She was an excellent seamstress and cook, and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and cross-stitch. She will be remembered for her devout love for dogs. Dorothy found the ocean very relaxing and spent as much time as possible visiting the harbors of Maine in the summer and fall. Family was important to Dorothy. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by a daughter, Carole A. Bassi and husband, Michael, of Dedham; a son, William J. Hawkes of Harmony; eight grandchildren, Michael Bassi Jr. and his wife, Jessica and daughters, Julia and Olivia and son, Jacob, of Bangor, Kristen Bassi Partridge and her husband, Paul and sons, Andrew, Cameron and Nolan, of North Andover, Mass., Andrea Bassi Morales and her husband, Frank and daughter, Gabriella, of Pacific Grove, Calif., BillieJo Hawkes Elliott of Farmington, Harold Hawkes of Glenburn, Gene Trojano of Bangor, Lisa Smith of Southwick, Mass., and William Alamo of Springfield, Mass.; numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Loretta Hawkes Stearn. The family expresses their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Woodlands of Brewer Alzheimer Care Unit and Beacon Hospice for all their compassion and care of our mother.
