BANGOR, Maine — The man police say was involved in a March shoplifting spree at the Target store in Bangor turned himself into police this week, Sgt. Paul Edwards said Wednesday.

The Bangor Police Department on March 9 posted store surveillance images of a shoplifter, later identified as Jason C. Mulligan, 36, of Brewer, on the department’s Facebook page and provided them to the local news media. People who recognized Mulligan helped police identify him, the sergeant said.

Mulligan, who was wanted on theft and assault charges in connection with the March 6 incident, turned himself into the Penobscot County Jail on Monday. Store security videos showed him taking $274.94 worth of DVDs and Blu-ray discs by placing them in his jacket, When confronted about the alleged thefts, Mulligan allegedly shoved a security guard and then quickly fled in a green Jeep Cherokee.

He also was wanted on warrants charging him with two thefts in Holden for gasoline drive-offs in November and January totaling $51.29 and $37.62, Holden police Sgt. Eugene Fizell has said.

Mulligan has several convictions for operating under the influence and was convicted twice in 2007 for operating a vehicle after habitual offender revocation, according to court listings printed in the Bangor Daily News. He was sent to jail for 45 days for the first habitual offender offense and was given a nine-month sentence for the second. In January 2007, he also was ordered to pay a $400 fine for unlawful possession of a scheduled drug.
