BAR HARBOR and EASTPORT – Tor A. Nilsen, 82, died May 10, 2011, in Bar Harbor. He loved the sea and never wanted to be far from it. He was born Oct. 18, 1928, in Rumford, of Norwegian ancestry, son of Martha (Swain) and Matthias Nilsen.

He moved to Eastport as a child and was educated in Eastport schools. He attended the University of Maine and was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army. He worked in sardine canneries and later at J.J. Newberry, from which he retired as manager. Later in life he moved to Columbia Falls and then to Birch Bay Village, Bar Harbor, where he made his home for the past several years.

He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Elizabeth; and his brother, Theodore. He is survived by several cousins.
