BROOKSVILLE – Ernest M. Black, 86, died Sunday, May 22, 2011, at Penobscot Nursing Home with his loving family by his side. He was born Dec. 12, 1924, the son of Lewis and Iva (Snow) Black.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, being stationed in the South Pacific and South China Sea, and was involved in the battles of Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Luzon, Leyte and the Liberation of the Philippines. He was employed for many years at Maine Maritime Academy. Ernest was also a member of District 2 MEBA out of New York. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved cutting his own firewood.
He is survived by and will greatly be missed by his loving wife, Patricia (Closson) of Brooksville; four daughters, Stephanie Black of Penobscot, Heidi Judkins and husband, Warren, of Deer Isle, Stacey Black of Brooksville and Heather Black of Sedgwick; four grandchildren, Samantha, Sarah, Mariah and Matthew; one brother, Richard Black and wife, Suzanne, of Blue Hill; one sister, Mary Snow of Penobscot; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers and sisters, Gertrude, Madeline, Robert, Archie, William and Peggy.
Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 28 Elm St., Bucksport.
