GUILFORD – J. Alfred “Fred” Rioux, 91, died May 30, 2011, at Hibbard Nursing Home, Dover-Foxcroft. He was born Oct. 10, 1919, in Mackamp, son of Cyprien and Amanda (Rousseau) Rioux.

He graduated from Jackman High School. After graduation, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving in Europe and Africa. After the war, he worked many jobs, attended barber school and established himself as a barber, eventually settling in Guilford. For many years he faithfully attended Holy Family Catholic Church, Sangerville, and was a member of Conner Trafton American Legion Post No. 119, Guilford.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Theresa (Bartley) Rioux of Guilford; four sons, George Rioux and his wife, Jessica, of California, John Rioux of Augusta, Joe A. Rioux Jr. of California, and Eugene Rioux and his wife, Cheryl, of Holden; two daughters, Candy Nelson and her husband, Ron, of Guilford, and Carol Bolstridge and her husband, Larry, of New Hampshire; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, many special friends and longtime customers. He was predeceased by a son, Gerard. The family greatly appreciated the care that Fred received at Hibbard’s and Mayo Regional Hospital.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 7, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Dover-Foxcroft, with the Rev. Kent Ouellette officiating. Burial will take place at a later date at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations in his memory to the charity of your choice.
