RANDOLPH, N.H. — The Appalachian Mountain Club says the nation’s oldest continually operating mountain hut is reopening in New Hampshire’s Presidential Range.
The Madison Spring Hut, located at 4,825 feet, is reopening Tuesday after an extensive renovation to improve its comfort and “green” features.
The AMC began rebuilding the hut last fall.
It first opened to overnight guests in 1889. It was several times and rebuilt in 1940 after a fire.
The renovation includes a waterless toilet system, solar photovoltaic panels for electric power, plus new solar thermal collectors to pre-heat water for cooking and washing dishes.
