Estate planning seminar at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital

ELLSWORTH, Maine — A free estate planning seminar taught by lawyers Jeffery Jones and Joseph Connors will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, June 9, and Friday, June 10, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital.

On Thursday, the seminar will cover wills, simple trusts and powers of attorney. Friday will provide more advanced information, including tax planning, complex trusts and planned giving.

Energy efficient ranger station to be dedicated in Calais

CALAIS, Maine — The official ribbon-cutting and dedication of the new energy-efficient ranger station at Saint Croix Island International Historic Site will take place on June 4.

Local dignitaries including Rep. Mike Michaud will attend the ribbon cutting.

“This new facility will help us commemorate the island’s place in our nation’s history,” Michaud, D-Maine, said this week. “It will also make sure the accounts and actions of the past live on and can be appreciated by generations to come.”

Saint Croix Island International Historic Site commemorates one of the earliest European settlements in North America.

Regular hours of operation for the new facility are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. through May, June, September and October, and 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. in July and August.

Washington County Children’s Chorus plans spring concert

MACHIAS , Maine — The Washington County Children’s Chorus will present its 2011 Spring Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 12, at Centre Street Congregational Church.

Music for the program will include selections from the group’s June 2010 tour in Luxembourg as well as new additions to the repertoire.

Three graduating high school seniors will be recognized: Christopher Plaisted of Jonesboro, Washington Academy; Molly Abrams of Cutler, Washington Academy; and Bridgette Koch of Machias, Machias Memorial High School. Plaisted and Abrams plan to major in music education at the University of Maine at Orono.

MDI Hospital Auxiliary to hold bake sale

Artist-in Resident at True East

EASTPORT, Maine — Musicians and artists Karen Krolak and Ralph Farris are coming to Eastport in June to serve as artists-in-residence at True East, a collaborative project with Eastport Strings.

Karen Krolak is the founder and artistic director of “Monkeyhouse – Connecting Communities to Choreography,” which has been voted best dance company in Boston. Based in New York City, Ralph Farris is the founder and artistic director of ETHEL – an American postclassical string quartet.

The two artists are collaborating with Eastport Strings to create a communitywide, interactive event to be held through the first half of June.

The duo will spend several days working with Eastport Strings members. All workshops and rehearsals are free and will be open to the public.

A workshop for teachers, artists and musicians will be offered from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 11, at the Eastport Arts Center. “Create and Play: Reinvigorate Our Creative Spark,” is a  “grown up play date” that will help create the community performance, “Magnet to the Breakwater.” The performance will be held at 6 p.m. that same day at the Eastport Arts Center and will feature Eastport Strings and a classical peformance by Krolak and Farris. After a brief intermission, at 7:30 p.m., they will perform a rock concert with members of Shead High School band and other local musicians.

Over the course of the next week, the focus will then shift to a series of workshops and rehearsals with community members and local school groups that will lead up to the grand finale at 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 15. Rain date is Monday, June 20.
