OCALA, Fla. – George Alfred “Al” Smith Jr., 86, passed away June 2, 2011, at home. He was born Nov. 4, 1924, in Webster Plantation, son of the late George Alfred Smith Sr. and Katie McAlpine Smith.

He graduated from Eastern Maine Institute, Springfield, Class of 1943. Al worked in the pulp and paper industry for 40 years in Lincoln and Baileyville. He enjoyed owning Grand Lake Lodge in Grand Lake Stream for several years.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 65 years, Peggy; three children, Kenyon and Carol, Craig and Coleen, and Marikay and David McGinty; grandchildren, Todd and Jennifer, Dean and Aliana, Jason, Amy, Troy, Corey, Eric Smith, Stephanie Doughty, Melissa and Ed McKersie, David McGinty Jr., and Alicia Hartford; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, Ivan and Kathy, Mayland and Shelia, and Herbert and Gladys; sisters, Eleanor Webster Dorothy Dill and Mabel Dill; also many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Elmer, Earl, Lester and Merlin Smith; and sister, Beatrice Severance.
