HOWLAND – Lila L. Smith, 87, passed away peacefully June 4, 2011, at a Howland health care facility. She was born June 2, 1924, in Howland, the daughter of Frank and Marjorie (Garrett) Pettingill.
She married Loren “Smitty” Smith, April 26, 1941. Lila was a loving mother and grandmother. She worked at times at Irving Tannery and Cummings Healthcare Facility. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and made many socks, mittens and doilies. She was a 50-plus year member of Order of the Eastern Star.
In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by an infant brother, Durwood; a sister, Alice; and a brother-in-law, Raymond Doughty. She is survived by a son, Loren Frank Smith and his wife, Laura, of Wayne; a daughter, Judy Smith and her husband, Doug, of Oakland; four grandchildren, Tharryn and Cheri Smith of Topsham, Todd and Kelly Smith of Oakland, Chad Loren and Lynn Smith of Bradley, and Stacey and Chris Shea of Auburn; six great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, Connor, Cole, Hunter, Gage and Loren; sisters-in-law, Jean Smith of Bucksport and Charlotte Brackett and Fred of Searsport; brother-in-law, Maurice and Anna Smith of Florida; many special nieces and nephews; and a special great-niece, Jocelyn Thomas. The family thanks the staff of Orono Commons and Cummings Healthcare for the excellent care given to Lila.
