BANGOR – Mary Catherine Wood, 87, died June 4, 2011, at a Bangor hospital after a period of declining health. She was born Sept. 6, 1923, in South Portland, daughter of Fred and Marie (Verow) Wood.

She was baptized at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Portland, and had her primary education at St. Teresa’s Parochial School, South Brewer. She was a 1941 graduate of John Bapst High School and also attended Beals Business College. She was employed by Bangor & Aroostook Railroad for 39 years, a career that began as a clerk in the passenger highway division and concluded as executive assistant to the president. Mary Catherine was a faithful member and communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of St. Paul the Apostle Parish, Bangor. She was a life member of Eastern Maine Healthcare and St. Joseph Healthcare auxiliaries, and was a member of St. Mary’s Sodality.

Surviving is a cousin, George F. Parent and his wife, Anita, of Bangor. She will be remembered by a special cousin, Claire Twomey Varney of Bedford, N.H. For many years, she cared for cats that needed a home. Her last “buddy” was 19-year-old Buttercup, who died April 4.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday, June 9, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Ohio Street, Bangor. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor. A time of fellowship and refreshments will be immediately afterward. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Bangor Human Society, 693 B Mount Hope Ave., Bangor, ME 04401 or to a charity of one’s choice.
