MACHIASPORT – Philip C. Rose, 73, died May 11, 2011, in Belfast, as the result of a traffic accident. He was born Sept. 2, 1937, son of Herbert and Pearle Rose.
Philip grew up in Yarmouth. He graduated from North Yarmouth Academy, Class of 1955, and from Bowdoin College in 1959. He served two years in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant, taught English for 25 years at Falmouth, worked as dock master for Portland Yacht, and then moved to Starboard, Machiasport. He founded a yacht delivery service from Maine to Bahamas. He was elected selectman and worked for Sunrise Senior College, where he taught navigation. He loved poetry so joined The Salt Coast Sages. He just finished a book of his poems!
Philip was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by two sons, Richard Rose and his wife, Julie, and Leigh Rose and wife, Emily Shaw; one grandson, Duncan, whom he adored; and two sisters, Marcia Adams and husband, John, and Linda Lund and friend, Mac MacFadyen.
Services will be held 11 a.m. June 25 at Roque Bluffs Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Imagination Library, care of Literacy Volunteers of Washington County, P.O. Box 825, Machias, ME 06454.
