OCALA, Fla., and JONESPORT – Maynard K. Smith Jr., 73, passed away June 5, 2011, in Ocala, Fla., after a long and courageous battle with colon cancer. He was born April 2, 1938, in Jonesport, son of the late Maynard K. Smith Sr. and Annie A. Smith (Donovan).
Maynard proudly served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force in the Military Police Division, during which he served two tours in Vietnam. He was also stationed throughout the U.S. and abroad before retiring. Maynard enjoyed gardening and going out to eat with friends, and he had a great love for Cadillac cars.
Maynard is survived by two sisters, Marion Ouellete and husband, Robert, of Jonesport, and Joyce Sinford and husband, Paul, of Hancock; two brothers, Dwight and wife, Arlene, of Jonesport, and Ralph and wife, Peggy, of Jonesport; one uncle, Malcolm Donovan of Machias; one aunt, Gertrude Libby of Lake City, Fla.; many nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by three special friends, Wayne Sands, Connie Pederson and Ella Harrell, all of Ocala, Fla.
Friends and family are invited to attend a graveside service 2 p.m. Sunday, July 10, at Smith Family Cemetery, Mason’s Bay Road, Jonesport. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maynard’s memory to The Ark Animal Shelter, Cherryfield.
