BANGOR, Maine — A 16-year-old Canaan boy who was seriously injured July 3 in an ATV accident is showing signs of improvement as he recovers at Eastern Maine Medical Center, according to Edith Smith, a spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
The boy, who is not being identified at the request of his family, remained in critical condition Tuesday but has had breathing tubes removed and is responsive, Smith said. The boy was previously being kept in a drug-induced coma. He has been moved from EMMC’s pediatric intensive care unit to the hospital’s adult ICU, according to Smith.
The boy suffered “severe head trauma” when he crashed on Murray Road in Newport on the afternoon of July 3. A crash reconstruction done by Maine Warden Service officers determined that the boy was going too fast around a curve despite a warning about the corner from a relative on another ATV. The boy was not wearing a helmet.
“We are cautiously optimistic with these improvements,” Smith said in a press release.
