MANCHESTER, Maine — Police are crediting a fast-thinking boy for loading his father’s shotgun and killing a pit bull to end the mauling of his grandmother and two others in Manchester.

Kennebec County Sheriff Randy Liberty said the 68-year-old woman could have been killed if not for 12-year-old Brandon Baile. Liberty described Wednesday’s attacks as one of the worst he had seen.

The 120-pound dog attacked and killed a smaller dog living in the same home, then attacked the boy’s younger brother and a 28-year-old man who tried to break up the fight before going for the grandmother.

Baile’s father, 30-year-old Jeremiah Baile, who owned the pit bull, told the Kennebec Journal that he had advised family members to keep the dog locked in a bedroom because the dog couldn’t be trusted.
