NEWPORT, Maine — A Newport man faces a July 27 court date after being accused by his wife of domestic violence.

Derrick Piper, 23, was arrested at about 11:30 a.m. Monday, July 11, in Winterport. Piper, who has no previous criminal record, according to Newport police Lt. Randy Wing, is charged with domestic violence assault and obstructing the report of a crime.

Wing said Piper is accused of assaulting his wife and then taking her cellphone at about 4:10 a.m. Monday. The victim did not require medical attention. Piper was arrested by the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department at about 11:30 a.m. that day at a friend’s house in Winterport. Piper was later released on bail with the restriction that he have no contact with his wife.
