WATERVILLE, Maine — Police in Maine say a woman was rescued after being spotted naked, crying and incoherent in a sewer pipe 25 feet above the Kennebec River.

Rescuers had to rappel down a cliff to pull the 24-year-old Clinton woman out of the pipe, which emerges from a cliff and empties into the river in Waterville.

Police Chief Joseph Massey says the woman was found Sunday after a Maine Central Railroad worker called to report that a naked woman had run through the rail yard toward the river.

The Portland Press Herald says she was taken to MaineGeneral Center Thayer Campus for evaluation.
