HERMON and CARMEL – Stanley W. Garland passed away July 24, 2011, at his home in Hermon. He was born May 12, 1927, in Carmel, son of Everett and Pearl (Douglass) Garland.
Stanley served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Seabee in the South Pacific stationed in Guam. He was then employed with Bangor & Aroostook Railroad for 40 years, retiring from Northern Maine Junction Diesel Shop in 1987. He was a member of Benevolent Lodge No. 87 AF & AM, Carmel, and Anah Shriners. He was a member of Bangor Singles Club, where he attended regularly with his friend, Joann Cheverie. He looked forward to weekly bowling at Family Fun Lanes with his niece, Susan Starbird. Stanley enjoyed nature, hunting, fishing and camping with his family and friends. He was a good cook, who will be remembered for his hunters’ breakfast. He took pride in maintaining his home and property. Dancing was a passion he enjoyed all his life. Stanley was baptized in his 80s, memorized many Bible verses, and was a man of great inner strength.
Stanley was predeceased by his wife, Paula Sheldon; two sons, Stanley Jr. and David Sr.; his older brother, Gerald; a sister, Myrna Roberts; and daughter-in-law, Lorraine Ashe. Stanley is survived by his daughter, Nancy Stanley and her husband, Lee, of Gorham; his brothers, Francis Garland and wife, Bernice, and Everett Garland and wife, Mary, all of Carmel; six grandchildren, Lisa Downs, Wendy Garland Dore, Stanley Garland III, David Garland Jr., Lee Stanley Jr. and Chris Curran; nine great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews and many close friends. The family thanks New Hope Hospice for their excellent care and loving support of Stanley during this chapter of his life.
A memorial service celebrating Stanley’s life will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, July 31, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, with the Rev. Robert T. Carlson officiating.
