EAST MACHIAS – Virginia (Sylvia) Hooper passed away unexpectedly Monday, July 25, 2011, at a local hospital. Ginny was born Oct. 24, 1937, at her family home in East Machias, to Hollis and Virginia (Bagley) Sylvia.

Ginny worked very hard throughout her entire life, making sure everyone in her family had everything they needed. She always thought of others before herself, and was truly living proof of what any person should aspire to be. She taught her family the value of hard work, which was shown through her want to continue working even into her golden years. She was an avid farmer and a member of Downeast Farmers Association. As much as she loved farming, she had an even greater love for gardening, as shown through the many that she kept. She gave most of the bounty to her family and friends, and anyone else who needed a helping hand. She also loved painting and quilting, and made sure that all of her grandchildren had all the quilts they ever wanted. She was also an excellent cook. She was always in the kitchen, whether at her work of many years, Bay Ridge School, or at her home making things to deliver to family.

She is survived by her four children, Edward Paul and wife, Colleen, of Whitneyville, and their two children, Katie and Jacob, Jada Hanscom and husband, Barry, of Jacksonville, and their two children, Jessica and Charles, Hollis Stevens and wife, Tammy, of East Machias, and their four children, Whitney, Shanee, Natea and Kaiya, and Roland Hooper II of East Machias. She is also survived by a brother, Dwaine Sylvia and wife, Connie, and their two children, Mary Sylvia and her four children, and Ida Wilcox and her husband, Basil, and their four children; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and an extraordinary amount of friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of more than 40 years, Roland Esten Hooper Sr.; her parents, Virginia (Bagley) Sylvia and Hollis Sylvia; and a sister, Rae.

Viewing will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, at McClure Family Funeral Services, Machias. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, July 28, at Jacksonville Cemetery.
