BANGOR – Helen M. Hersom, 82, passed peacefully July 28, 2011, with family at her side, at a Bangor hospital, after a brief illness. She was born Nov. 3, 1928, in Presque Isle, daughter of Merle and Lena (Purrington) Hagerman.
Helen was a hairdresser by trade, but spent her working career in school cafeteria management in Easton and later in Hermon. Her passions were family, friends, bowling, ice skating, card games, fishing and fiddleheads. No visits to her home would be complete without a good game of Hand and Foot. Helen’s game skills were finely tuned by weekly sessions with her card playing buddies, Charlotte, Joanne Betty and Babe. The Hersom family spent many wonderful summers at Cedar Point on the shores of East Grand Lake, where no salmon or lake trout were safe if Helen and Jean Lamoreau were on the water. Helen had a unique recipe for homemade macaroni that sent many full bellies to the couch for an afternoon nap.
She was predeceased too early in her life by her love, her husband, Carroll Hersom Sr. Helen is survived by her son, Cal and Val Hersom of Punta Gorda, Fla.; daughter, Suzie and Mark Tuck of Bangor; three sisters, Gloria Dodge, Pat and her husband, Harland Dodge, and Elsie Estey; her brother, Dana Hagerman; six grandchildren, Melanie and husband, Nino Chiappone, Jeremy Hersom, Jason Tuck and wife, Hannah, Joey, Kerri and Cassandra Tuck; three great-grandchildren, Leandro Felice, Annie and Matthew Tuck; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service of remembrance will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, July 31, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with Pastor Scot McPhedran, of Columbia Street Baptist Church, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, after the service.
