ELLSWORTH – Mary E. Franklin, 102, died July 31, 2011, at an Ellsworth health care facility. She was born April 14, 1910, daughter of Loring L. and Armenia (Brown) Franklin.

She was educated in the Ellsworth school system, graduated from Farmington State Normal School, and received her Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Maine, Orono, and a degree in education from Hillyer College of the University of Hartford, West Hartford, Conn. She was involved in elementary education for 42 years, having taught in most of the schools of Winsted, Conn., for 35 years and in Ellsworth junior high level for seven years. Mary attended First Congregational Church and supported many of their activities. She was a regular donor to many worthwhile organizations. She was a member of Maine and Connecticut Retired Teachers associations, and at one time was a member of the Theta Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Society. After retiring from teaching, she was employed by The Ellsworth American for several years doing proof reading and writing the 25-50 years ago columns. Mary liked doing handwork, especially crocheting and woodworking. She was fond of most sports, was an avid golfer and bowler, and enjoyed watching baseball and football games especially.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Nina F. Berry and Margaret B. Franklin; and three brothers, Dalton J. Sr., Leamon P. and Donald L. Franklin.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, at Juniper Cemetery, Ellsworth Falls, with the Rev. Nick Davis presiding.
