BANGOR – Fern E. (Doyle) Golightly, 84, wife of the late Maj. Clayton J. Golightly, retired, succumbed to lung cancer Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at her home. Fern was the last remaining sibling in a family of 10 children born to James and Florence Doyle of South Brewer.
She is survived by her children, William Golightly and wife, Judith, of Newport News, Va., and Janet Doyle and husband, Mike, of East Corinth. She was predeceased by her beloved companion of 18 years, Elijah “Butch” Butcher who passed away in 1997. Butch’s sons, Ralph Butcher and wife, Jenny, and William Butcher and wife, Terri, were as dear to Fern as if they were her own children. Fern is also survived by her grandchildren, Scott Golightly and wife, Sarah, of Richmond, Va., Sean Golightly of Charlotte, N.C., David Higgins and wife, Karen, of Hudson, and Jennifer Doyle of Corinth; five great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Fern’s cherished friends, Joan Poole and Rowena Borgeais, as well as her card-playing friends Mickey Tracey, Carol Ware, Dot Lindsey and Doris Grover have shared many wonderful stories and memories. A special thanks to Dr. Hartz, Dr. Ronco and the nurses and aides with Bangor Area Nurses Hospice Unit for their loving care.
There will be a graveside service 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at Pine Grove Cemetery, outer Hammond Street, Bangor. Father Nadeau of St. Mary’s Parish, Bangor, will lead in prayer. All family and friends are invited to attend and to visit with her family at her home immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, Fern requested that donations be made to your local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
