HAMPDEN – George C. Hill, 89, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011, in Bangor. He was born Sept. 10, 1921, in Concord, Calif., son of William and Sarah Hill.
He was a longtime resident of Portsmouth, Va., before moving to Maine a few years ago with his wife to be with their daughter and her family. George enjoyed a distinguished career as an optometrist. He retired after a long service as the industrial optometrist of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Norfolk, Va. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. He, with his wife, Anita, was active at the local, regional and national level in the Sons of Norway.
George is survived by his wife, Anita Hill; his daughter, Anita Robinson and her husband, Jodie, and son, Jodie Jr., of Opelika, Ala.; and his son-in-law, Roy Turner and his daughter, Kathrina, of Hampden. He was predeceased by his daughter, Elise Turner of Hampden. George will be remembered by his family and friends for his great intelligence and wit, his love of life, his devotion to family, and his ability to make everyone feel at ease and at home around him.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. James L. Haddix, pastor and teacher, and the Rev. Renee U. Garrett, M. Div., Minister of Christian Nurture, officiating. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
