VEAZIE – Avis Woster Harkness Black, 71, died Aug. 15, 2011, at a Bangor hospital. She was born April 5, 1940, in Bangor, the daughter of Orris A.
and Alice (Kettell) Harkness.
Avis was a lifelong resident of Veazie. She graduated from Bangor High School and the University of Maine, Orono. Avis will be remembered for her wide range of interests, her thoughtfulness, caring, kindness and generosity. She always maintained a very positive and happy personality, loved music, reading and a good joke. Avis was a member of Veazie Congregational Church.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd L. Black; a brother, Vinton O. Harkness Sr.; and a sister, Elizabeth A. Harkness. Avis is survived by her sister, Betty H. Peters and her husband, Charlie; niece, Karen M. Peters; nephew, V.O. Harkness Jr., and his wife, Jackie; cousins, Alfred and Lisa Kettell, Philip and Donna Doyen, Francina Pearse, Charlotte Pease, Robert and James Bartlett; longtime family friends, Harvey and Marion Bagley; and many friends, including those at Orono Commons.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 3-6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. The family will have a private interment at a later date at Fairview Cemetery, Veazie, with Pastor David Fox.
