DEXTER, Maine — A free day of live music, play activities, and resource and display tables for expectant families, as well as families and caregivers with young children, is on tap when the Highlands Family Fun Day is held Saturday, Sept. 10, at Ridge View School.

Door prizes and toys for infants and children under age 5 will be featured throughout the day together with displays and resources from agencies and programs serving the Highlands region. Providers will explain their services and educational opportunities will include dental health for babies, nutrition, child development and child management. There also will be ideas shared for take-home games and activities.

A major feature of the Highlands Family Fun Day will be the chance for all expectant families and those with children under 12 months old to enroll in the Alfond Scholarship Fund. The funds provide $500 to start a NextGen College Scholarship for each baby born in Maine. Baby pictures will be taken and given to all families who enroll.

Live music will be provided during the event by local musicians; Raising Readers will be on hand with a quiet space where parents can explore books with their children; healthy snacks will be provided; and the Highlands Tooth Fairy will make an appearance.

There will be games and activities for older brothers and sisters as well.

The Highlands Family Fun Day is sponsored by Helping Hands with Heart, the former Piscataquis County Children’s Cabinet. Helping Hands with Heart is a consortium of agencies, programs and advocates serving the Highlands area that advocates for services and resources for families and young children. The Maine Community Foundation provided a grant for the event.
