SCARBOROUGH – Maynard “Ned” Currier Black passed away peacefully Aug. 18, 2011, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. Ned was born March 7, 1948, in Bangor, a son of Maurice G. and Eleanor (Dyer) Black.
He attended South Portland High School and served his country in the 1960s, stationed with the U.S. Army in Germany during the Vietnam War. Ned left the U.S. Air National Guard military police as a staff sergeant guarding the 101st Airborne Division at Bangor International Airport. He was a licensed hamm radio operator, registered under the call letters KU1Z for more than 30 years. He enjoyed rock ‘n’ roll music and had played bass guitar since his teens.
Ned is survived by two sons, Baron Grant of Sanford and Lance Black of Northampton, Mass.; brother, Maurice W. Black of South Portland; sisters, Brenda Hilden of North Waterboro and Tzeana Gross of Cape Elizabeth; one grandchild, Katie Grant of Sanford; two nieces, Sarah Black and Erin Gross; and two nephews, Allen Vose and Ryan Gross.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at Independent Death Care, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland. He will be buried at a later date with his father at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.
