MEDWAY – Douglas Merritt, 76, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, at a Millinocket hospital.

He was born Aug. 25, 1934, in East Millinocket, the son of George and Ethel (Reynolds) Merritt.

Dougie grew up in East Millinocket and attended Schenck High School. He worked for the Great Northern Paper Co. for 35 years, retiring in 1996. Dougie enjoyed hunting with his stepson, Gene, and was an avid camper. He and his wife, Barbara, spent a great deal of time camping, especially enjoying Birch Point near Island Falls.

Dougie is survived by his wife of 30 years, Barbara (Roy) Merritt of Medway; two children, Troy Merritt of Medway and Douglas Robinson and his wife, Lynn, of Lincoln; six stepchildren, Marie Brown of Medway, Gene Lee and his wife, Angie, of Medway, Oran Lee and his wife, Sarah, of Millinocket, Geneva Anderson and Terry, Elaine Carll and her fiance, Sheldon Worcester, of Skowhegan and Debbie Hale and her fiance, Dell Libby; 39 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Alvin Merritt and his wife, Carol, of Medway; a sister, Gloria O’Donal and her husband, John, of Winn; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, Dougie was predeceased by two sisters, Beverly Smith and Bertha Martin; and a brother, Charles Merritt.

At Dougie’s request, there will be no services. Gifts in memory of Dougie may be sent to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, Millinocket. Messages of condolence may be expressed at
