ORONO — Carolynne Nellis scored a first-half goal and the defense made it stand up as the University of Maine edged Charleston Southern 1-0 in women’s soccer action Friday afternoon.

Meagan Leibenzede saved four out of nine shots in the Black Bears’ season opener.

Amy Arroyo stopped six of 15 shots for 0-2 Charleston Southern.

Northeastern 3, Maine 2

At Orono, Crystal Poland scored two first-half goals to propel the Huskies past the Black Bears.

Carolyn Malloy’s second-half score game Northeastern (1-0) a 3-1 lead.

Stephanie Gardiner, who had opened the scoring for the Black Bears 1:10 into the game, added a second-half goal to draw Maine (0-1) to within a goal, but the Bears could not draw even.

Lizzie Priest made seven saves on shots for Northeastern, and Maine’s Brittany Fleck made six saves on nine shots.
