AUGUSTA, Maine — A dozen shelters have opened across Maine for people needing refuge as heavy rains and gusting winds arrive ahead of Hurricane Irene.
The Maine Emergency Management Agency says shelters are opening Sunday in Scarborough, South Portland, Westbrook, Bridgton, Portland, Windham, Thomaston, Wiscasset, Islesboro, Saco, Wells and South Berwick.
The National Weather Service says power outages are expected Sunday, with the heaviest rains and strongest winds expected in the afternoon and into the night.
