WADE – Sterling Orville Haynes, 74, died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, surrounded by his loving family at home. He was born July 30, 1937, son of Orville and Ola (Fox) Haynes. He was born in Wade, at his grandparent’s home, Sterling and Axi Fox.

He graduated from Washburn District High School in 1957. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. While in the service he would hitchhike home from Virginia to see his sweetheart and future wife of 47 years, Sandra Boyles. Sterl worked for International Harvester, Crown Equipment, road commissioner for the town of Wade, County Super Spud, Griffin Construction and was self-employed with Haynes Welding and Repair for many years. He had a passion and talent for fabricating and welding. He built several conveyors, bulkbodies, gravel screeners and most anything out of metal. He carried a small notebook, pen and tape measure wherever he went so he could jot down ideas and draw out a diagram. He was mischievous, adventurous and curious. He and his wife liked to take a Sunday drive to see what there was to see. They would travel down roads they hadn’t been on just to see where they came out. He truly enjoyed his involvement with the Northern Maine Antique Tractor Club. He looked forward to all of the events and especially the friendships and socialization with club members. He loved to “putter” in his shop and restore antique tractors. He even took on the challenge of teaching his oldest daughter, Robin, how to overhaul his 1954 Farmall Super C. When asked, he would tell people, “She could be helpful.”

He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra; daughters, Robin Haynes and her sweetheart, James Pelletier, of Caribou and Virginia White and husband, John, of Bradford; and sister, Bonnie Sands of Broken Bow, Neb. He was extremely proud of his three grandchildren, Steven Holmes, Samantha and Kenneth White; niece, Paula Peterson; nephew, Timothy Barrow; as well as several cousins. Sterl appreciated the care, support and smiles from caregivers at The Aroostook Medical Center, Eastern Maine Medical Center and Hospice of Aroostook.

Family and friends may gather noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, for visitation at Dunntown Advent Christian Church, Wade, where a memorial service will be held 1-2 p.m. A military committal will be at Maine Veterans Cemetery, Caribou. Those who wish to remember Sterl in a special way may make a donation in his memory to a charity of their choice. Online condolences may be expressed at
