FALMOUTH – Serena Ann Wilson, 88, died Sept. 22, 2011, at Sedgewood Commons, Falmouth. Serena was born Oct. 18, 1922, in Presque Isle, daughter of George H. Simpson and Charlotte (Deming) Simpson.

She attended St. Stephen (New Brunswick) High School and Shaw’s Business School, Toronto. In 1941 she married Stuart W. Wilson of Eastport.

During her many years in Eastport, she was employed in the office of Holmes Packing Corp. and later worked as librarian at Shead High School and at the Quoddy Tides newspaper. She volunteered at Peavey Memorial Library and served as a senior companion with Eastern Area on Aging.

She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church where she sang in the choir and volunteered at their thrift shop. Serena was an integral part of the Eastport community and knew its history and people well. She regularly would share old photos, news articles and books about Eastport with family, recounting the stories of the people and events that made up the city’s history. She especially loved old photographs of the waterfront that documented the ever-changing face of Eastport’s downtown. A favorite activity was driving around the island to take in the natural beauty of Down East Maine. She loved to sing, dance and play the piano, and looked forward to the concerts at the library gazebo during annual Fourth of July celebrations. She was well read, a stickler for good grammar, and loved to do crossword puzzles. Family and friends relied on her quick wit and loved to share a laugh with her. She remained in her beloved Eastport until 2008.

She was predeceased by former husband, Stuart Wilson; brother, George Simpson; and sister, Georgina Gant. She is survived by son, David S. Wilson and wife, Marikay, of Readfield; daughter, M. Diana Rush and husband, Daniel, of Kennebunk; son, Stephen A. Wilson and wife, Cyndi Amato, of Portland; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Plans for a memorial service to be held in Eastport will be announced. For those who desire, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 12, Eastport, ME 04631 or Sedgewood Commons, 22 Northbrook Drive, Falmouth, ME 04105. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta.
