SATELLITE BEACH, Fla., and CASTINE – Lucy Anne Soper, 98, died peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011. She was born in Rionero, Italy, the daughter of Marco and Maria Pignone, and immigrated to New Bedford, Mass., at age 7.
She was the wife of nearly 50 years to the late Edward A. Soper, whom she married Jan. 1, 1940. She graduated from Eastern State Normal School, Castine, and taught school in Maine for 25 years before retiring to Florida. Her passions were gardening, crocheting, knitting and sewing. She made more than 50 quilts for family and friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Lois Mazza and husband, Bill; her sisters, Leah Goodhue and husband, Roy, Jeanne Meek, and Florence Johnson and husband, Robert; brother, Marco Pignone and wife, Lorna; her grandchildren, Dori Tanguay, Bill Eaton and wife, Kathy, Anthony Eaton, and Stacia Nevin and husband, Crocker; and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter, Susanne Anderson; a brother, Arthur; and a sister, Madeline.
A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, at Brownlie-Maxwell Funeral Home, Melbourne, Fla. A graveside service will be announced at a later date and held in Castine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Wuesthoff Hospice, 8060 Spyglass Hill Road, Viera, FL 32940.
