LINNEUS, Maine — Four people have been charged in connection with Monday’s home burglary that occurred while the family of local businessman Darrell McGuire attended his funeral, Maine State Police Sgt. Brian L. Harris said Friday.

Cheryl Sawyer, 32, of Linneus and Phil Buzzeo, 33, of Houlton were arrested Thursday night and two other persons of interest — Halston Wiley, 30, of the Houlton area and Amanda Berry, 26, of Weston — were caught together in Bangor just before 2 p.m. Friday, the sergeant said.

The burglary “struck the community really hard,” Harris said, adding that police received many tips, some from as far away as New Hampshire, about who might have committed the crime.

Linneus is a community of about 800 residents located just southwest of Houlton in Aroostook County.

Trooper Dennis Quint arrested Sawyer and Buzzeo and charged both with receiving stolen property and additional chargers of burglary.

Maine State Police troopers in Bangor picked up Wiley and Berry. According to Harris, Berry was arrested for burglary, theft, violation of conditions of release and possession of drugs. Wiley was arrested for burglary and theft.

Berry, Wiley, Buzzeo and Sawyer were taken to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton.

The burglars who entered the Linneus residence Monday afternoon while the McGuire family attended memorial services at the Houlton Wesleyan Church took jewelry, guns, prescription medications and other small items, the family said.

The burglary was noticed shortly after the loved ones of McGuire, who died at home on Sept. 29, returned shortly before 5 p.m. to the residence on New Limerick Road. Family members said they were angry and hurt.

“It just boggles my mind that anyone would do that,” his widow, Barbara McGuire, said Wednesday.

“It makes me so angry, I have a hard time talking about it,” her son Doug McGuire said.

Quint and Detective Darrin Crane of the state police’s evidence response team gathered evidence at the scene.

The McGuire family offered a $5,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and prosecution of whoever was involved in this crime. It was not clear Friday if that reward helped lead police to Sawyer or Buzzeo.

Darrell McGuire was 78 when he died. He established Darrell McGuire and Sons, a logging contractor operation in Linneus, and DBJ McGuire, a truck garage in Houlton, both of which are still run by family members.
