JONESBORO – Nelson L. Smith, 91, a resident of Washington County, passed away Friday, Oct. 14, 2011, at his home. Nelson was born May 20, 1920, to Raymond and Mittie (Hatch) Smith in Jonesboro.

He attended Jonesboro schools and later entered the U.S. Army. Nelson served during World War II as an anti-tank gun crewman. He later served in the military as a surgical technician. After leaving the military, Nelson worked as a truck driver for Gay Brothers and C.F.D.W. Look. On July 15, 1966, he and Linda Gaudette were united in marriage in Machias. Nelson later worked for Maine Department of Transportation, retiring from maintenance and truck driving. He was also a member of Maine State Employees Association. In his free time, Nelson enjoyed hunting, ice fishing and snowmobile riding.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Smith; grandsons, Dwayne Smith and Kim, and Dale Smith; great-grandsons, Derek and Devin Smith; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Nelson was predeceased by his parents; sons, Gordon and Kevin Smith; brothers, Harris, Donald, Winnifred, Adain, Harold and Hollis Smith; and sister, Estelle Dorr.

A graveside service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Ingersoll Cemetery, Centerville, with the Rev. David Gardiner officiating. Services are under the direction of Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Machias. Condolences may be sent to
