RUMFORD, Maine — Police accused a local man of stealing alcohol from a Hancock Street business late Wednesday evening.

After arresting and charging Christopher Sheldon, 26, with theft at 11:10 p.m., Sgt. Tracey Higley said the officers discovered he had a spring-assisted knife with him.

That prompted a second misdemeanor charge of possession or distribution of dangerous knives.

Sheldon was booked at the Rumford police station and released on $1,000 unsecured bail. He will be arraigned Jan. 3 in Rumford District Court.

In other police news, Richard Dodge, 60, of Rumford, was arrested at 3:46 p.m. Wednesday on a charge of disorderly conduct on Bridge Street.

He was released on $400 unsecured bail and will be arraigned on Dec. 6 in Rumford District Court.
