MILLINOCKET – John A. Brown, 87, died Monday, Oct. 31, 2011, at a Millinocket hospital. He was born Nov. 6, 1923, in Millinocket, son of John C. and Mable (Gildart) Brown.

John grew up in Millinocket and joined the U.S. Army after graduating high school. He served as a medic in World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism during a night crossing of the Rhine River. After the war, John returned to Millinocket and resumed working at Great Northern Paper Co., where he remained until retiring in 1986. John was a member of Millinocket Elks Club and National Rifle Association. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and spent many hours pursuing that pastime, as well as playing cribbage and pitch.

John is survived by a son, William T. Brown and his wife, Janice, of South Portland; grandson, Evan Brown of Odessa, Texas; daughter-in-law, Anne Brown of Tampa, Fla.; sister, Margaret “Peggy” Oliver of Millinocket; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his wife, Geraldine B. (Colby) Brown; son, Robert Brown; and 10 siblings.

At John’s request, there will be no services. Private interment will be at Millinocket Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, Millinocket. Messages of condolence may be expressed at
