AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. Paul LePage is encouraging Mainers to vote against a ballot question that would continue to allow residents to register to vote on Election Day.

In his weekly radio address Saturday, LePage says voting “no” on Question 1 in Tuesday’s election will make Maine elections more secure.

Mainers have been allowed to register to vote on Election Day since the early 1970s. The Legislature this year passed a law requiring voters to register at least two business days before an election, but opponents forced a referendum seeking to restore same-day voter registration.

In his radio address, LePage says polling clerks are busy enough on Election Day without having to review new registrations.
